About the Band

Formed in 2023, the Geelong Latin Band, who perform under the name Son Geelong, brings together Australian and Latin American musicians who share a passion for Afro-Latin music. We perform at social nights, festivals, community events, and private functions—always delivering an immersive experience rooted in Cuban son, Dominican merengue, salsa, and bachata.

Committed to nurturing a thriving Latin music community, we host occasional open rehearsals that invite both emerging and experienced players to connect and create. These sessions are often preceded by percussion workshops—perfect for dancers and musicians alike to explore the rhythmic foundations that drive our sound.

Meet the Musos

Dale Atwell – Percussion

Dale Atwell is the founder and band leader of the group. For more than 20 years, he has immersed himself in Latin music—first as a dancer and instructor, teaching salsa and bachata across the Geelong region. His commitment to teaching dancers the rhythmic foundations evolved into a passion for Latin hand percussion, where he shines as a seasoned conguero for the band. Dale regularly leads rehearsals and percussion workshops, sharing his expertise in Afro-Cuban rhythms and empowering musicians at every level to join the fiesta.

Carla Davis – Vocals

Born in Lima, Peru, Carla grew up in a musical household and naturally gravitated to singing. Surrounded by Latin music’s lively pulse, its rhythms became part of her everyday life. She moved to Australia in 2011 and joined the band in 2024, where she has continued to develop as a performer. Carla delights audiences with warm, rhythmic vocals and playful dance moves, inviting everyone to share the joy of Latin music.

Jasmin Monterroso - Vocals

Born in Guatemala, Jasmin grew up surrounded by the vibrant rhythms of Latin music and developed a deep appreciation for its cultural richness. With salsa roots at heart, she has always been especially passionate about salsa and bachata, which have been a constant part of her life and identity. During her years in Singapore, she was part of her church choir, where she refined her vocal skills, learned to perform in harmony with others, and strengthened her love for sharing music with the community. For Jasmin, music has always been a meaningful way to connect with people and celebrate her heritage.
